Speaker Series with Renata Bricka

Speaker Series with RENATA BRICKA

Wednesday, Nov 3, 2024 @ 7 p.m. PT

Folk ingenuity at its best is expressed in the picturesque wooden churches of Slovakia. The perfect harmony of the soul with nature still speaks to us today. Whether Protestant, Catholic, Greek Catholic, or Orthodox, Slovak wooden churches are breathtakingly beautiful. They have an exceptional worldwide value, which is why they are part of the UNESCO global human heritage.

Some of them were built 5 centuries ago!
Others were constructed without a single nail!
There were once over 300 wooden churches in Slovakia.
Sixty remain for us to admire today.

Join Renata Bricka to learn more about this unique part of the inheritance of our ancestors. Renata Helena Bricka, born in Slovakia, moved to the US in 1982. She holds an MA in Fine Arts and Art History and an MA in Russian Language and Literature. Renata's career has been rich. She has worked as a translator at the Oregon State University, designed opera costumes, and taught costume design and art. She also worked as a docent in the Haggin Museum and currently gives many varied presentations on Art History. Renata Bricka received several awards for her costume design and also an award from the Stockton Arts Commission.

The event is free of charge, but registration is required.

Golden Gate Park Hike to T.G. Masaryk's Bust

Sokol San Francisco Monthly Hikes

Golden Gate Park with a visit to T.G. Masaryk's bust - March 9, 2024 @ 11 am

Every year, our unit remembers T.G. Masaryk with a hike and a visit to his bust in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. JOIN US!

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was a Czechoslovak statesman, political activist, and philosopher who served as the first president of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1935. He is regarded as the founding father of Czechoslovakia.

Let’s meet in the parking lot by Stow Lake Boathouse.

From there we will go visit the Rose Garden and the bust of Tomas G Masaryk.

Masaryk's birthday is March 7 so we will lay some flowers at his bust at the Rose Garden.

Sokol San Francisco donated the bust to Golden Gate Park many years ago, come and hear the story.

We will visit the Observatory Deck of the de Young Museum to get a view of the City; it is free of charge and the views are beautiful!

We will continue by the Japanese Tea Gardens back to Stow Lake, cross the Stow Lake Bridge over to visit the waterfalls, and we will end up back by the boathouse.

It is an easy hike; all flat. Hopefully, the flowers will start blooming and we can welcome spring at this beautiful park.

Moravian Days in Lemont, Illinois

  • Lemont, IL United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Mark your calendars

We are planning a field trip to the 84th Annual Moravian Days Festivalin Lemont, IL

September 23rd and 24th, 2023

Moravian Day festival focuses on the spirit, beauty, and talents of the Czech, Slovak, and Moravian regions.

Come to Moravian Days to feel the heart and soul of people celebrating a festival in true ethnic style.

Our goal is to preserve traditions and show our future generations the music, dancing, and culture of their ancestors. During this weekend festival, you can listen or sing along to beautiful songs of the heartland.

Enjoy the energetic rhythms of polkas and such from our dancers of all ages. Have traditional food & bakery and imported Czech beer. You can also purchase arts & crafts from the Czech and Slovak Republics. There will be "Kolace" eating contest on Saturday!

The suggested plan for the trip is flying out Friday afternoon from SFO, spending 2 nights in a hotel, visiting the two-day festival, and returning back to SFO on Sunday night. We have budgeted a stipend for Sokol SF members to attend this cultural event. The amount per person will be based on the number of people attending.

Alternatively, we could take a red-eye flight from SFO on Friday and spend only 1 night in a hotel. Or you can totally travel on your own and meet us at the festival.

If you are interested in joining us, please send an email by April 30, 2023 to sokolsfevents@gmail.com and please let us know if you prefer 1 night (red-eye flight) or 2-night stay (leaving in the afternoon on Friday), or traveling on your own.

Sea View Trail starting at Steam Trains in Tilden Park

September hike on Sea View Trail starting at Steam Trains in Tilden Park on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 9:30am to 12pm.

We will meet at 9:30am at the upper/overflow parking lot of the Tilden Park Steam Trains at the Sea View Trailhead.

Steam Trains:

2481 Grizzly Peak Blvd. Berkeley, CA (Google Maps to Steam Trains)

Look for the SOKOL SF Signs

We will hike the Sea View Trail for one hour and then back to our cars, which is the most scenic trail.

Bring a sun hat, water, and sunglasses. A portion of the trail is not shaded.

The trail has some short uphill parts and then levels out. We will pace ourselves so everyone can participate.

The historic steam trains open at 11 a.m. and are a memorable Berkeley attraction for kids of all ages. A ride costs $4
